Dental Hygienist (and Temporary) License in Maine

Maine requires dental hygienist applicants to graduate from a CODA-accredited dental hygiene program and pass the NBDHE plus a clinical examination. The Maine Board of Dental Practice oversees dental hygienist licensing under the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation. CE is required for biennial renewal, typically 20 hours per two-year period. Maine was among the first states to authorize independent practice dental hygienists (IPDH), allowing experienced hygienists to provide preventive services without direct dentist supervision in certain settings.
